Transfer mining II: mining that regenerates nature

Regenerate, protect and restore life. At Tolsa, we understand mining not only as a way to obtain resources, but as an opportunity to rebuild the relationship between industry and nature. Our model shows that it is possible to extract value from the land while, at the same time, giving value back to the environment.

A model that leaves room for life

Our work is based on an essential principle: returning the land to its original state. Through progressive restoration, we refill intervened areas with sterile soil from new excavations, which speeds up land recovery and limits the surface area affected at any given time. This approach significantly reduces the environmental footprint of our operations and facilitates the early recovery of ecosystems.

We also apply the environmental mitigation hierarchy — avoid, minimize, restore, compensate and enhance — to actively protect species and their habitats. We avoid developments in ecologically sensitive areas or those with high biodiversity value, prevent deforestation linked to our operations, and prioritize nature-based solutions to compensate for unavoidable impacts, improving landscape connectivity and supporting conservation areas.

We develop flora and fauna monitoring plans, especially for protected species, and integrate them into our Environmental Management System through measurable objectives, indicators and performance audits. This allows us to understand how our operations interact with the environment and to continuously improve our practices.

Collaboration and commitment to biodiversity

Conserving the natural environment is only possible through collaboration. That is why we work alongside environmental organizations, experts and local communities to promote restoration and awareness-raising projects.

A standout example is the Compensatory Measures Project for the Conservation of Steppe Birds in the province of Toledo, which seeks to preserve key habitats through ecological restoration, scientific monitoring and local participation.

In addition, we carry out concrete actions in different countries:

  • In Senegal, we promote reforestation programs to combat desertification.
  • In Spain, we planted more than 1,000 trees in 2025 as part of our biodiversity and climate strategy.
  • In 2024, we offset the CO₂ emissions from our corporate travel by planting 300 trees, with a further 350 added thanks to participation in our global survey.

Certification and leadership in sustainability

Our commitment is backed by international sustainable mining standards (UNE 22480), certified in Madrid, Toledo and Senegal. In 2024, Tolsa successfully renewed its Sustainable Mining Certification for these facilities, reinforcing our position as a benchmark for good environmental practices and our determination to lead responsible, regenerative and future-oriented mining.
