Tolsa leads MADBAT, a pioneering project to develop the next generation of active materials for lithium-ion batteries in the Community of Madrid.
Tolsa, a leading Spanish company in the development of advanced materials based on special minerals, has launched MADBAT, the Battery Innovation Hub promoted by the Community of Madrid. The project, funded by the Community of Madrid, aims to accelerate the development of innovative materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
The project kicked off with a launch meeting in Madrid that brought together all the participating partners. At this first meeting, the lines of work were shared, the technical planning was aligned, and the first actions were defined to move forward with coordinated implementation.
MADBAT is part of the Community of Madrid’s Battery Innovation Hub, a regional initiative that seeks to respond to the energy trilemma (competitiveness, security of supply and sustainability) through technological innovation and cooperation between industry and knowledge.
In a context marked by the electrification of transport, the expansion of stationary storage and the need to reduce external dependence on critical materials, MADBAT seeks to contribute to strengthening the regional value chain in electrochemical storage technologies, from research into new materials to their validation in prototype cells, incorporating an industrial and market vision from the outset.
A consortium with complementary capabilities and industrial backing
The MADBAT consortium brings together key players in Madrid’s technological ecosystem. Alongside Tolsa, as the coordinating entity, participants include Moeve, IMDEA Energy, IMDEA Materials and Rey Juan Carlos University, as well as technology start-ups Floatech, B5Tec and Empirical Advances. The project also has the support of an industrial advisory board made up of Stellantis, Ricardo and Técnicas Reunidas, reinforcing its focus on real-world application and its connection with industrial needs.
As project coordinator, Tolsa is leading the technical definition of MADBAT and contributing its expertise in the engineering of high added-value silicate and clay-based materials, as well as in formulation, scaling and industrial production processes. With MADBAT, the company is reinforcing its innovation strategy, aligned with European priorities in energy storage and sustainable transition.
Antonio Esteban, Tolsa’s director of Research and Technological Innovation, highlights: “MADBAT represents a decisive step in positioning the Community of Madrid and Spain at the forefront of energy storage in Europe. At Tolsa, we are proud to lead a project that combines cutting-edge science, innovative industry and a clear market vision.”
