We are proud to announce that our subsidiary Mabensa (Morocco) has achieved an “A” rating in the BSCI 2020 audit. This goal represents an example of Tolsa’s commitment to aligning our global strategies and operations with the Ten Universal Principles on human rights, standards labor and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
What is the BSCI?
The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) is a broad business platform which was created in order to monitor social compliance in the supply chain and to avoid, among other things, these kinds of injustices which, though they are legal in many countries, are immoral.
Its aim is to ensure the fulfilment of certain social and environmental standards, certifying that supplier companies do not just talk about Corporate Social Responsibility principles but also apply them.
The BSCI’s code of conduct acts in conformity with the Conventions of the ILO, including elements of legal compliance, freedom of association and the right to negotiation of the convention, non-discrimination, fair wages, working hours, occupational health and safety, prohibition of child labour and forced labour, disciplinary measures and environmental and work safety issues.
Similar standards of good labour practices such as the SEDEX and the OSHAS operate in different market areas/ countries, promoted by other business associations.
At Tolsa, one of our priorities is to guarantee that all our products meet our clients’ requirements, not only with regard to quality but also in relation to their Corporate Social Responsibility standards and good business practices. That is why we have signed up to the BSCI commitment.
How does the BSCI work?
Adhesion to the BSCI demonstrates our commitment to ethical treatment of the workforce and respect for the environment throughout the supply chain; this means submitting to a demanding audit which involves a constant improvement plan.
Clients who participate in the BSCI have exclusive access to the certified supplier database; there they can consult the results of its audits, a key aspect for the selection of a reliable, reputable supplier.
BSCI in TOLSA
At Tolsa, we have the satisfaction of being the first mining company to form part of the BSCI commitment in countries like Senegal and Morocco.
Our subsidiary in Morocco signed up to the BSCI in 2014, and in 2015 Tolsa’s Senegalese subsidiary joined the challenge, satisfactorily passing the stringent audit.
The decision to join this initiative was driven by clients such as REWE and AHOLD, for which we manufacture consumer products.
Reviewing our labour practices and checking that every detail was ready in order to pass the rigorous audits was a challenge which the teams in both subsidiaries enthusiastically welcomed.
In recent months, training plans have been put in place for each and every one of the employees of both subsidiaries. In order to raise awareness among our workers of this series of standards, there was a particular focus on encouraging them to actively collaborate in making their work increasingly safe and on training them how to react in the case of an emergency or the need for evacuation.
We would particularly highlight the motivation and the good work carried out by these teams before and during the audits.
This decision represents a major commitment, in terms of both investment and our way of understanding the business, and that is what clearly differentiates us from our competitors as a benchmark supplier that is leading the way.
